Analysis of the match between KV Mechelen and Club Brugge KV
Mechelen concluded the 2024/25 season in 8th place and has started the new season with an unconvincing performance. 'De Kakkers' were forced to share points in a 1-1 draw with newly-promoted Zulte Waregem last week, a result that leaves Coach Frederik Vanderbiest's squad in 7th position on the league table.
Despite winning all three of their pre-season friendly matches at home, when it came to official games at Achter De Kazerne since January, Mechelen only managed to secure all three points in two out of their eleven home league matches during that period, even though they only suffered one defeat.
On the other side, Nicky Hayen's Club Brugge narrowly missed out on the championship to Union Saint-Gilloise last season. However, they demonstrated a strong return by kicking off the new season with a 2-1 victory over Genk this past Sunday.
The three points gained in the opening round have propelled Hayen's side to 4th place in the domestic league standings, putting them two points ahead of their rivals, though still trailing leaders Anderlecht on goal difference. Club Brugge is particularly confident in their impressive away record: five wins and two draws in their last seven road trips, including convincing victories against Gent and Genk at the tail end of last season's campaign.
