Analysis of the match between USA and Mexico
Despite reaching the Gold Cup final for the 13th timeโone more than Mexicoโthe U.S. national team under coach Mauricio Pochettino has yet to instill confidence in its fans. Ahead of the 2025 Gold Cup, the Stars and Stripes disappointed, suffering a four-match losing streak against Panama, Canada, Turkey, and Switzerland. This marks their worst run of results since 2007 when they lost five consecutive games.
Even playing at home in the quarterfinals, the U.S. struggled immensely to overcome a weaker opponent, Costa Rica, only advancing after a tense penalty shootout. Clearly, the U.S. team's form still raises many questions.
Conversely, Mexico has displayed significantly more stability and composure. Since their hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Dominican Republic in the opening match, El Tri has secured three consecutive wins without conceding a single goal.
Mexico's defense has been impressively effective: in their last four matches, they faced 18 shots but allowed only 3 on target. Notably, in the Gold Cup knockout rounds, Mexico boasts a streak of five consecutive clean sheets, replicating a feat they last achieved between 1993 and 1998.
Given their defensive solidity and increasingly refined style of play, if Mexico defeats the U.S. to claim their 10th Gold Cup title, it would be a fully deserved and unsurprising outcome.
